At the very start of the Lego Movie 2 the characters are faced with a new arrival in their world. Most of them fight these strange beings, but Emmet implores them to try another approach: love. He makes a heart and offers it to them in a gesture of peace.
His gift is promptly chewed up, and the pieces spat out.
Without giving too much of the plot away, the alien creatures responded from a place of immaturity. They mirrored the violence they saw. They weren’t yet ready to understand the gift of grace offered to them.
And yet, the spat-out pieces became the path to the restoration of all things.
This morning as I broke bread and gave out the pieces of Jesus’ dismembered body, I prayed with hope that God would restore this fractured world.
